about

Originally released on double vinyl, cassette and CD by Tresor in 1996. Interest about the music on this album was rather overshadowed by the attention grabbing album title. When I was doing all the promo interviews at the time, the journalists would ask me these caring questions; was I suffering from depression, was this going to be my last album, was it some kind of complaint about the techno scene and so on. The irony was that I did intend it to be a statement, but a very positive and stimulating one. I wasn't really depressed at all, in fact I was feeling a great sense of artistic freedom (combined with the brutal hangovers you start to get in your mid-twenties). For the average techno fan at the time, I suppose the meaning of the title was difficult to understand. I suspect that may have been because it was ripped straight out of some Jean Baudrillard text and twisted out of context. For me, the phrase tries to handle the stark realisations of post-structuralism by fusing it with techno punk resourcefulness; freestyle negative dialectics. “All history has come to an end - They damned the past so hard they took the future with it”. That sort of thing.

Musically, it seems to have been the final explorations of my obsessive relationship with the unpleasant metallic digital timbres of the Yamaha DX11. Also, the last album I composed entirely in OctaMed, the legendary Amiga MIDI tracker. Most significantly on technical musical level, some of the sound design and composition came from early experimentation in CSound and its Unix GUI frontend Cecilia - which I got up and running on a Silicon Graphics Indigo2. Exactly how one of the most powerful graphics workstations at that time found its way into my little studio, is a bit of a mystery. Anyway, I am eternally grateful to whichever forces enabled me to crack that machine open and discover music tools only accesible to composers at IRCAM and other institutions. It was incredibly exciting, and I felt first hand how culture was about to explode. Listen to the additive synthesis on ‘Tearing The Groove’ (previously only available on vinyl) - and you’ll get a taste of what I was really trying to get at with the phrase ‘All Music Has Come To An End’.

Many thanks to all the fans who funded the 2015 remastering project!
