about

‘Busca Invisibles’ was my fourth album for Tresor Records. It was originally released in 1999 on double vinyl and CD*. The music had been recorded over a two year period of intense activity. It was made in parallel with the first album by Super_Collider, my avant-funk duo with Jamie Lidell. Thanks to the recording and publishing advances from the S_C project, I had the funds to design and build my first serious studio - the No Future Studio in the Metway building, Brighton.

The Metway was a former beer factory owned by a well known folk-pop band, The Levelers. They had their management, merch business and a really nice studio based there. The place had a lot of creative energy at that time. Acts such as Orbital and Tobias Schmidt ended up having small project studios in the building, along with other Brighton based visual artists and indie labels. Emma Sola moved our No Future management office up there, to continue with the administration of our labels and artist management projects. It became a genuine subculture factory. ‘Busca Invisibles’ was recorded half in that new environment and half in the old one. It represents many transitions in my personal and artistic development.

The new studio was finished in 98 and was a lot more serious than the previous cramped setups. The new setup meant that the Amiga and its TV screen had to be retired and I began to teach myself advanced digital music production. I was now composing on DAW, recording to hard disk, mixing on hybrid digital-analogue and patching virtual modular synths. The realtime DSP revolution was in full swing, and I was discovering so much so fast. My reliable process for electronic music production had become totally fragmented by software technology. It was dizzying and quite an achievement that I managed to get anything finished at all!

Thankfully the core compositional ideas had enough integrity to stand the test of time and techné. My musical expression was able to extend through complex programming, sound design and advanced mix techniques. I may not have got it all spot on, but I think its safe to say that this music doesn’t sound like anybody else that came before - or after for that matter. Whatever you may opine about digital sounds, cluttered rhythms and unconventional EQ curves - this unique album stands out for so many good reasons.

* the remastered version features one track that was on vinyl only, 'Wider Cracks', and an unreleased bonus track originally recorded as part of a session for John Peel.
