about

The conventional album rarely captures the processes, discipline and commitment that goes into the act of creating new music as a daily practice. 'Mist Tape on the other hand, invites the listener to engage with artistic process through sound, to become aware of how sonic art evolves and how processes relate, in a broader sense, to the daily existence of an artist in a permanent state of creation. An alchemical confession, perhaps?

'Mist Tape, as public release, was originally distributed on a limited edition 90 minute cassette tape released by The Tapeworm in Berlin and Touch in London in Spring 2016. It represents an intimate, and occasionally absurd, processual sonic art object. The music was recorded in realtime, directly to one cassette over a number of months. It is structured as a series of punch-ins direct from the mixing console, with no digital editing. The master cassette was a found medium, a so called 'audio book', collected from the street in Prenzlauerberg. Fragments of the underlying speech can be heard between punch-in points, chance elements in the overall tapestry of processual and algorithmically generated music.

The master tape is not available for sale, but still exists. The cassette duplications were limited to 200 copies, and a digital download version has been available for free streaming and purchase. Artist income received directly from sales has been approximately 25 euros (as of March 2017).

Some critical questions arise related to this rare and unique music object.

It is clearly audible how much time, talent, and dedication went into creating this particular 90 minute audio documentation of a music life - but how do we gauge the value of such studio art? Did the act of composing onto a worthless medium, add any value to it? Is alchemy a sham?
