about

The fact that 10 years since its release, I cannot find a significant review of this album, good or bad, seems to imply that its time has still not come. The process music I recorded for this album, were the results of my first full year studying the Kyma sound specification language. I was interested in composing a purely abstract and realtime expression of generative techno music. I programmed rhythmic and sound design sequencers that helped me isolate what seemed to attract me most in techno - I was tired of buying records for spinning, they seemed so static. I was seeking an improvisation system that could generate what I liked best in the sound, in realtime and without relying on looping clips of audio. I remember applying a strict design aesthetic to a quantised, interpolating but limited parameter space. The performance system found itself a name - many names in fact. “The NeverEngine” , running on my Kyma rig, went on to be the only performance tool I improvised with on stage for at least the next 8 years.

So this record is a lot more than the way it sounds. But what a sound! I regard the rhythmic and sonic qualities on this album as one of my best achievements in computational sound design and structural morphology.

At the end of the process, I commissioned two mastering versions; the vinyl was mastered and cut by Rashad Becker at Dubplates and Mastering, and the CD was mastered (at least twice) by Bo at Calyx. I consider them both to be exemplary mastering for electronic music.
