Etude (Cristian Vogel remix)

about

I composed this piece using source material from an original 1961 composition by pioneering electornic music composer Elsa Marie Pade. It was commissioned for a tribute CD compilation released by DaCapo.

The original recording of Else Marie Pade's 'Etude' seems to have been the result of an initial exploration into audio signal feedback probably using tape machines with filtering in the feedback path, by the sound of it. I took this interpretation as a starting point, and came up with a modern equivalent. I used internet video streaming to broadcast some of Else's sounds over the internet from my studio computer in Copenhagen. I used my phone as a receiver for that around-the-world signal. By connecting the phone back into the mixer I was able to harness the natural delay of the web as the main delay time. Signal degradation from data compression codecs added a contemporary type of subtractive filtering. I used results from this process in the final composition.

'The first sound is set in motion, is caught up by the next, which is caught up by the next, etc., in a powerful crescendo.' In 1961, Else Marie Pade (1924–2016) wrote the tape composition Etude, which was met with greater excitement among reviewers than electronic music in general at the time. The length of the piece is 333 seconds, and as a tribute to Else Marie Pade 11 artists have remixed Etude on this CD – all 11 remixes with the same length as the original.
